As the temperature continues to heat up this summer, it is important for propane users to take simple safety measures to keep their homes safe. Employees at Ferrellgas are offering tips designed to minimize potential dangers caused by extreme heat.
“Propane is an excellent source of energy used by millions of people in the United States to power their homes and businesses,” said Steve Wambold, Ferrellgas' Chief Operating Officer. “As with other energy sources, it’s important the proper safety precautions are taken to ensure safe results.”
Safety tips
If your home uses propane as a source of energy, you should consider adopting these safety measures to protect your system and home during the hot summer months. These tips were compiled by the Propane Education & Research Council:
- Make sure the area within 10 feet of your propane tank and/or propane grill is clear of flammable materials. Remove any debris that is combustible or easily ignited, including leaves, brush, any vegetation, and rags.
- Consider installing UL-listed propane gas detectors and CO detectors. These detectors provide you with an additional measure of security.
- Cool down your outdoor propane tank by spraying it with a garden hose. By doing so, you can help lower the gas pressure and elevated temperature levels inside the tank. This reduces the possibility of the system releasing excess gas through the pressure-relief valve, its built-in safety feature.
- Schedule a time for a qualified service technician to perform a complete inspection of your propane system. Do not attempt repairs yourself.
“At Ferrellgas, safety is part of everything we do,” said Wambold, “which is why we want to make sure propane users have the necessary information and resources available to keep their families safe and enjoy the hottest days of summer.”
